As soon as you walk through the door to this salon, you are greeted with smiling faces and an immaculate West Coast vibe. Having the opportunity to capture images of this space and the talented humans who work here was a real joy from start to finish.
"What was once a rustic style studio, has now grown into the beautiful harbour view salon, that many know and frequent today."
Fun fact: This salon is located where the Sooke Arts Council Gallery once was. While it is sad to see the gallery gone, it is so wonderful to step into the beautifully curated space and see a creative business blooming in a beautiful location.

When did you first start your business and what inspired you to do so?
Rustic Roots was started as a one man show in 2014. What was once a small cabin in the woods has now turned into two locations in our beautiful town. With 7 stylists located at Rustic Roots, and 3 suite renters at our RR Micro Studio location.
What has been your favourite part of building your brand?
I LOVE creating an environment for staff and guest to come experience a service that is unique to only our locations.
What is your favourite part of your work day?
It never feels like work!
Aside from the tools of your craft, what is the most important thing you have to have for it to be a good day?
Happy healthy stylists and guests!
Growing a brand takes a lot of work. How much time do you spend on your business in an average week?
This is a hard one.
I spend hours on the daily always working the business.
Any tips for others starting out in your creative field?
Keep going. When you feel like giving up, just keep going no matter how many times life kicks you down.
Anything else you'd like to add?
We value and love to support local as much as we can. We carry local jewelry, candles, locally made RR Scrunchies and headbands. All products we use are non animal tested. As well as very plant powered products. We have won two customer service awards in the chamber of commerce.
A week after this shoot, I returned to the salon as a customer to get a much needed hair cut. I explained to Kiristina that, for medical reasons, I was struggling to maintain long hair and was battling hair loss and breakage. I had been on the verge of just shaving it all off many times. She was so thoughtful and compassionate throughout the whole process of picking a drastically new style, and not only gave me a new look that I love, but one that works with my life and abilities.
It takes so much, talent, creativity and human connection to do what these talented stylists achieve every day. It is so wonderful to have them on our doorstep!
