Artist Spotlight: Island Creations

I first learned about Jamie's beautiful creations at the Sooke Night Market in 2019. Her stall was full of natural, beachy sculptures that always caught my eye. The West Coast vibes were immaculate and each piece seemed to have this life to them as if she'd preserved natural movements of an underwater world and frozen them in time to be admired on the land.

More recently, while scrolling through Facebook I saw a post from Island Creations advertising a huge blow out sale raising funds for The Sooke Food Bank .

50% of all profits will be donated to this charitable local service which does wonderful work within the Sooke community. When I read this I knew I wanted to reach out and make Jamie's beautiful creations this week's Artist Spotlight. More details of this fundraiser can be found at the bottom of this article.

"Formally Jamie's rock tastic beach art. I do work out of my home and always open and offering clean safe socially distanced tours of my art"

Fun Fact: When I went to interview Jamie, I was given such a warm welcome. She is such a kind, bubbly person. We had so much to talk about and were chatting for ages. I was amazed at her collection of rocks and her beautiful garden space. I'm also totally jelous of her studio, when I was running Twisted Fern Designs, working off my dining room table, I was dreaming of a studio, just like that!

Ok, let's begin...

First of all tell us who you are!

Island Creations

What do you make, create, or sell?

I make art pieces from all things beach.

Where can people find you online?

My Facebook page is Island Creations

How and when did you first start your craft?

I started about 4 years ago I'd just quit my very busy job and all of a sudden had all this time to fill.

What has been your favourite creation so far?

I honestly couldn't pick just one lol I wouldn't know where to start!

What is your favourite part of your creation process?

Going to the beach and seeing a piece of driftwood or kelp and knowing right away what I want to do with it.

Aside from the tools of your craft, what is the most important thing for you to have when you sit down to create?

All I need is an organized work space and a good head space.

Do you create full time? How much time do you spend on your craft?

I am a housekeeper but when I'm not working doing that I am working on my art.

Any tips for others starting out in your creative field?

If you don't enjoy it don't do it 😉

It was such a joy meeting Jamie and getting an insight into her art and creation process. Her vision for turning found items into such beautiful, natural sculptures is amazing to see. She would pick up a piece of driftwood and point out the patterns and designs she could see in it, way beyond what I first saw. Such an inspiration that art can be found and is all around us if we know how to see it.

The Island Creations blow out fundraising sale is taking place on August 27th and 28th from 10am - 4pm at #105 8228 West coast Rd.

"I will have everything set up outdoors weather permitting lol we are a fully vaccinated household let's give back to our community ♥️ I will be donating half of all proceeds to the Sooke Food Bank" - Jamie from Island Creations I would absolutely recommend the drive out to grab yourself (and your friends and family) some unique pieces of West Coast art!
